William Paterson University celebrates the incredible diversity of our campus and our commitment to learn from each other, and about each other. A commitment to diversity is one of the University’s core values. William Paterson is one of the most diverse colleges and universities in New Jersey; approximately 60 percent of the student body are students of color. Since 2015, the University has been designated as a Hispanic-Serving Institution (HSI), with more than 30 percent of current students claiming Hispanic heritage. All members of William Paterson are encouraged to become active participants in matters of diversity and inclusion to improve their understanding of these topics, foster strong relationships with others, and work toward positive change.

through proactive and inclusive outreach and programming, the center for diversity & inclusion and the black cultural center will engage the entire campus in the creation of a climate of justice, equity and inclusion founded on knowledge, understanding and empathy. initiatives will strategically map up to institutional goals related to student retention and success; positive campus climate; and student participation in high-impact practices. strategic priorities are:

  • Strengthen Student Agency

  • Provide Affinity-Based Support Services & Resources
  • Bolster Cultural Competency
  • Increase Representation and Visibility of Diverse Students

Upcoming Initiatives:

  • Leadership Development: Social Justice Badge. The new Social Justice Leadership Badge is for students who want to start leadership development related to being an agent of change. The program gives students of all identities the opportunity to understand systems of oppression, privilege, identity development, and strategies to create a more fair and just world. This program will be piloted Fall 2020.

  • Intergroup Dialogue. Intergroup Dialogue is a process that allows us to share our perspectives and experiences with one another about difficult issues we tend to just debate about or avoid entirely. Students will examine and discuss reading materials and videos that address issues and experiences relevant to William Paterson student body. Intergroup dialogue cultivates engagement across differences as we explore different perspectives and raise awareness and consciousness.

  • Signature Events. The Center for Diversity & Inclusion works collaboratively with Campus Activities and Student Leadership, the Student Activities Programming Board, Student Government Association, and campus partners across the campus to provide enrichment programs that celebrate the rich diversity of our students.     • Gender & Sexuality: As a part of William Paterson’s commitment to promote a safe, welcoming, and inclusive environment for all genders and sexual identities, the Center for Diversity & Inclusion works in collaboration with the Women’s Center strives to validate the experiences and serve the needs of the LGBTQ community through its LGBTQ Programs.

    • faith & spirituality: the center for diversity & inclusion supports interfaith programming, religious and non-religious student organizations and works with campus partners to advance spiritual awareness and celebrates the existence of religious diversity among the campus community at william paterson.

    • immigration justice: the center for diversity and inclusion will support the coalition for immigration justice in their efforts to raise awareness of issues impacting undocumented and daca students.
